A peptidase that cleaves a protein at an internal peptide bond. (see also exopeptidase)
An extension of the nuclear envelope that forms sheets of membranes that are generally parallel to the nucleus of a cell. (see also rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER))
The transport of unfolded or mis-folded proteins from the endoplasmic reticulum to the cytoplasm, where they are degraded by proteasomes.see unfolded protein response
(= adenylate energy charge)
see funnel concept
(see molecular dynamics)
(see molecular ruler)
A highly-ordered cluster of tissue-specific transcription factors that assemble at regulatory elements of a eukaryotic gene and which, by their arrangement in space, act synergistically and purportedly account for the diversity and tissue specificity of gene expression.Carey, M. (1998) Cell 92, 5-8
A 50-150bp sequence of DNA that increases the rate of transcription of coding sequences. It may be located at various distances and in either orientation upstream from, downstream from or within a structural gene. The site binds cellular transcription factors, including steroid-receptor complexes. (see also promoter)
A device to enhance the sensitivity of autoradiography; the surface that is to be visualized is sandwiched between a photographic film and the screen, which is a film impregnated with a phosphor that is excited by the sample's -rays and which can enhance the primary emission from the sample with its own secondary emission.
