One of a class of compounds that includes the prostaglandins, thromboxanes and leukotrienes, all derived from arachidonic (eicosatetraenoic) acid.

(= electropermeabilization)

A concentration and charge difference across a membrane, e.g. the pH difference and membrane potential developed during mitochondrial electron transport. (see also chemiosmotic theory)

A separation procedure in which an electric field is imposed upon an ultrafiltration membrane in order to prevent non-permeable material from accumulating on and clogging it.

In X-ray crystallography, a representation that resembles a geological survey map of planes drawn through a crystal. It shows contours of equal electron density surrounding the individual atoms: steeper around heavier atoms; more shallow around lighter atoms.

A technique for detection of coupling between electrons and nuclei in order to gain information about the valance electron distribution around a paramagnetic nucleus; observation of an electron spin resonance transition while applying radio frequency energy to effect nuclear magnetic resonance transitions.

(= electron spin resonance (ESR))

Also known as electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR); a magnetic resonance technique that detects and characterizes the environment of a moiety that contains an unpaired electron by the energy that is equivalent to a change in its spin state. (see also spin label)Well, J.A., Bolton, J.R. and Wertz, J.E. A technique for visualizing subcellular structures at very high resolution (near 2.5 nm). The material is prepared for electron microscopy; electron micrographs are taken as the sample is tilted + or - 60o in small steps (e.g. 2o). The data are then computer-manipulated to recreate images of the structure in three-dimensional space. Also, electron microscopic images of random images of a structure may be reconstructed into a three-dimensional image of somewhat lower resolution. Related service: cell line development
