A series of enzymic reactions that at each step convert an inactive enzyme into an active enzyme, which in turn activates another inactive enzyme, and thus greatly amplifies the initial signal. In a homocascade all the events involve one enzymic type (e.g. proteolysis); in a heterocascade the events involve different enzymic types (e.g. phospholipase and kinase).
