Chlamydia trachomatis

Chlamydia trachomatis, commonly known as chlamydia, is a bacterium that causes chlamydia, which can manifest in various ways, including trachoma, lymphogranuloma venereum, nongonococcal urethritis, cervicitis, salpingitis, pelvic inflammatory disease. Chlamydia is a common sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by infection with Chlamydia trachomatis.

Chlamydia trachomatis has a genome comprising 1,042,519 nucleotide base pairs and approximately 894 likely protein-coding sequences.

The causative microorganism of one of the most prevalent sexually transmitted diseases, chlamydia infection, can lead to urethritis (inflammation of the urethra), pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy, and infertility. The infection may be asymptomatic, but patients may experience vaginal irritation or burning, discharge from the penis or vagina, or pain. This microorganism is also the cause of severe eye infections. At one time, testing for chlamydia was somewhat difficult; now, however, immunoassay can detect the antigens from swab specimens.
