area detector

An 'electronic film'; a device for measurement of diffracted radiation, e.g. in X-ray crystallographic analysis; detector devices are densely arrayed over a screen and report to a computer the intensity of incident light and its position on the screen. arginine fork

A specific kind of interaction between an RNA and an RNA-binding protein in which the two equivalent guanidinium nitrogens of an arginine residue interact with adjacent phosphates of a non-double-stranded region of the polynucleotide. ascus

A spore-like form through which yeast cells pass during their life cycle; an outer wall surrounds a diploid cell that undergoes meiosis to form four haploid cells (ascospores) which eventually rupture to yield two diploid daughters.

aspartate proteinase

A type of peptidase that has at its active site two aspartate residues. (see also cysteine proteinase (thiol proteinase); metalloproteinase; serine proteinase)

asymmetrical PCR

A protocol for generation of single-stranded DNA. Unequal amounts of primers are used, so that the first PCR cycles generate equal amounts of each strand of the template but later cycles, which have no more of one of the primers, create only one new strand.
