Diplopia

Diplopia is when you see two images of the same thing. You might know it as double vision. You might have diplopia in one eye or both. Generally, double vision in both eyes is more severe than having it in just one. Diplopia is the simultaneous perception of two images of a single object that may be displaced horizontally or vertically in relation to each other.

Diplopia, or double vision, is the sensation of seeing two copies of a viewed object. It results from an optic aberration of the eye (optical diplopia) or ocular misalignment (strabismic diplopia). Optical diplopia is caused by cataracts, uncorrected refractive error, or corneal irregularity. The second image usually overlaps the first image (‘ghosting’), disappears when a pinhole occluder is placed over the affected eye, and persists when the unaffected eye is covered. Strabismic diplopia is caused by disorders of the extraocular muscles, neuromuscular junction, ocular motor cranial nerves, or brainstem pathways. The second image does not overlap the first image and always disappears if either eye is covered.
