combinatorial chemistry

Combinatorial chemistry involves synthesizing a large number of compounds by the systematic assembly of chemical building blocks (e.g., amino acids and nucleotides). Thus, many molecules may be generated simultaneously through combinatorial chemistry methods resulting in large libraries of thousands of structurally-diverse small molecules, peptides, or oligonucleotides.

Combinatorial libraries may be synthesized on a solid phase (e.g., polystyrene resins and glass beads) or in solution phase. Combinatorial libraries are screened for desirable biological activity and support lead identification and optimization in the drug discovery process.
