chloroform

Chloroform is a nonflammable, volatile liquid that was the first inhalation anesthetic discovered. It is a dangerous drug that can cause hypotension, myocardial and respiratory depression, cardiogenic shock, ventricular fibrillation, coma, and death if improper dosage is used. Delayed poisoning, even weeks after complete recovery, can occur, and severe vision or eye damage is frequently reported.

Moreover, chloroform is well absorbed, metabolized, and eliminated by mammals after oral, inhalation, or dermal exposure. It is widely distributed in the entire organism via blood circulation and preferentially in fatty tissues and the brain due to its liposolubility. However, there stands a possibility of chloroform poisoning. Features of chloroform poisoning following ingestion include headache, impaired consciousness, convulsions, respiratory paralysis, dizziness, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Inhalation may result in dizziness and shortness of breath.
