cell theory

Cell theory refers to the idea that all living matter consists of cells, which are the structural and functional units of life, and all cells come from preexisting ones. This was a biologically significant statement because it suggested that all living things have a common denominator.

The history of cell theory is a history of the actual observation of cells because early prediction and speculation about the nature of the cell were generally unsuccessful. In biology, cell theory is a scientific theory first formulated in the mid-nineteenth century, indicating that living organisms are made up of cells, that cells are the basic structural/organizational unit of all organisms, and that all cells come from pre-existing cells.

The unified cell theory states that all living things are composed of one or more cells; the cell is the basic unit of life, and new cells arise from existing cells.
