Nuclear receptors (NRs) are a class of proteins responding to the extra- and intracellular signals carried by steroid or thyroid hormones to regulate the expression of target genes. In molecular biology, nuclear receptors are a class of proteins found within cells responsible for sensing steroid and thyroid hormones and certain other molecules.
A nuclear protein that allows regulation of gene expression by a lipophilic effector molecule, such as a steroid or thyroid hormone, eicosanoid, retinoid, or ecdysone. When the effector molecule is bound to the receptor protein, the latter can also bind to a specific DNA sequence.
Nuclear receptors (NRs) can also be defined as transcription factors regulating many biological processes, including cell growth and development, metabolism, reproduction, and inflammation.
