Active agglutination

Active agglutination is a process in immunology and microbiology where the clumping or aggregation of particles, typically cells or antigens, occurs due to the specific interaction between antibodies and their corresponding antigens. It is a characteristic feature of specific immune responses, particularly in the context of antigen-antibody reactions.

In active agglutination, the agglutination reaction is initiated by the active participation of specific antibodies produced by the immune system in response to an antigen. When these antibodies encounter their corresponding antigens, they bind to them, forming large complexes. As a result, the particles or cells carrying the antigens clump together, forming visible aggregates that can be observed macroscopically or microscopically.

Active agglutination is commonly used in laboratory diagnostics, such as serological tests, to detect infectious diseases. It provides a means to detect and identify specific antigens or antibodies based on the principle of agglutination. Various techniques, such as slide agglutination, tube agglutination, or microplate agglutination, can facilitate and assess the agglutination reactions.
