visual cortex

Visual cortex is part of the cerebral cortex that processes visual information. The visual cortex is where we see the images before our eyes.

The visual cortex is also the cortical area that receives information from the lateral geniculate body of the thalamus. Neurological damage affecting the visual cortex of the occipital lobe, common following right hemisphere strokes, can result in neglect of half the visual. A classic feature of this problem is the failure to eat food on the left side of a plate.

The miracle of vision begins when our photoreceptors absorb light reflected by our surroundings. However, the photoreceptor's duty does not end with photon capture. In addition, the photoreceptor must convert the energy of the absorbed photon into an electrochemical signal to be relayed to the brain’s visual cortex. The occipital lobe is the location of the visual cortex, and the temporal lobe is the primary site of the auditory cortex, which plays a significant role in memory and emotion.
