proteasome

Proteasomes are protein complexes that degrade unneeded or damaged proteins by proteolysis, a chemical reaction that breaks peptide bonds.

The proteasome is a highly sophisticated protease complex designed to carry out selective, efficient, and processive hydrolysis of client proteins.

The proteasome is also a multienzyme complex involved in the ubiquitin–proteasome pathway control of cell-cycle progression, in the termination of signal transduction cascades, and the removal of mutant, damaged, and misfolded proteins.

Proteasomes are found in all organs of higher eukaryotes, but the degree to which the composition of proteasomes and their activators varies among tissues is largely unexplored territory. Proteasomes are complex intracellular proteases that function in the regulated degradation of cellular proteins. The turnover of proteins by the proteasome regulates many processes, including the cell cycle, circadian cycles, transcription, growth, development, and removal of abnormal proteins. Sufficient intake of nutritional antioxidants, such as lutein, zeaxanthin, vitamins C, E, and zinc, may protect the proteasome from oxidative inactivation, preserve the UPP function in the eye, and reduce the risk for age-related eye diseases.
