polyolefin

A polyolefin is a type of polymer with the general formula (CH2CHR)n where R is an alkyl group, and a family of polymers (such as polyethylene and polypropylene) made from olefin monomer. They are usually derived from a small set of simple olefins (alkenes).

Polyolefins are macromolecules formed by the polymerization of olefin monomer units.

When the polyolefin and muconic acid are mixed, and free-radical addition is initiated, a hydrogen atom on a polyolefin carbon atom (either on the main chain or on a side group) is replaced by a muconic acid side group.

Polyolefins constitute half of the annual polymer production worldwide. Polyolefins pose special challenges for their analysis owing to their semicrystalline nature and insolubility in common solvents at ambient temperature. The characterization techniques for polyolefins include crystallization-based fractionation techniques (temperature rising elution fractionation, crystallization analysis fractionation, crystallization elution fractionation), column chromatographic techniques (high temperature-size exclusion chromatography, high-temperature interaction chromatography), and channel-based fractionation technique (field-flow fractionation).
