agarose

A highly purified agar derivative that is used as an electrophoresis and chromatography support.

agonist

A compound, often a hormone or its analogue, that binds to a receptor and elicits a response. (see also antagonist)

ala scan

A series of structural variants of a peptide synthesized in order to evaluate the contribution of each residue to the peptide's binding. In each variant a different residue is replaced with an alanine residue, and the affinity of the variant peptide is measured and compared with that of the original.

aldol condensation

The reversible formation of a bond between two carbons, one of a carbonyl group and the other adjacent to a second carbonyl group; by extension, a condensation of compounds that share that kind of chemistry, e.g. the citrate synthase reaction.

all-or-none assay

A technique to measure the total amount of a functional enzyme, regardless of its efficiency or affinity for its substrate.

allele-specific PCR

allele-specific PCR (ASPCR)

The adaptation of a PCR primer to selectivity for only one variant sequence. The 3'-end of the primer is designed to be complementary to only one allelic sequence, so the appearance of a PCR fragment is indicative of the presence of the variant sequence.Ugozzoli, L. and Wallace, R.B. allostasis

The altered state caused by stress, trauma, disease, aging, etc. The cumulative burden (stated in physiological, endocrinological or psychiatric terms, depending upon the context) of the shift from homeostasis to allostasis, is the allostatic load.Seeman, T.E., Singer, B.H., Rowe, J.W., Horwitz, R.I. and McEwen, B.S.
