mechanism-based inhibitor

An enzyme inhibitor that differs from the classical substrate or product analogue. One category comprises transition-state analogues that do not form covalent links to the enzymes but bind very tightly to them; the other category contains enzyme-activated, kcat or suicide inhibitors, which require the action of the enzyme upon them to convert them into alkylating or other reactive agents that can form covalent complexes with the enzyme.
