Preserving Our Environment

At GenScript, we are committed to green and low-carbon operations. Our green practices focus on environmental management, resource management, and waste management. We mitigate our impact on the environment by maintaining an efficient environmental management system, optimizing resource utilization, transitioning into renewable energy, and managing waste. This also allows us to improve the efficiency of our operations.

Climate Targets

Near-term target:

Operations Emissions: Reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 54.6% by 2033 (base year 2023).

Near-term target:

Energy and Waste Management: Reduce greenhouse gas emissions from fuel- and energy-related activities and operational waste by 32.5% by 2033 (base year 2023).

Near-term target:

Supplier Engagement: Engage suppliers representing 83% of total Scope 3 emissions to set science-based targets (SBTi) by 2029.

Long-term target:

Net-Zero Emissions: Achieve net-zero emissions across Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 by 2050.

Our initiatives

  • Set carbon reduction targets approved by the SBTi, committing to the 1.5°C pathway and net-zero by 2050
  • Conduct annual corporate GHG accounting and verification to track decarbonization progress
  • Link environmental indicators to performance reviews of the management to ensure effective environmental management across all levels

Our initiatives

  • Pursue ISO 50001 Energy Management System certification at major manufacturing sites, among which our enzyme manufacturing site has been certified to ISO 50001
  • Reduce energy consumption by renovating equipment, e.g. installing a municipal water atomization system to enhance chiller cooling efficiency
  • Implement waste heat recovery projects in different scenarios to improve energy utilization
  • Integrate renewable energy into our energy mix by deploying a photovoltaic system at major manufacturing sites

Our initiatives

  • Conduct water balance testing and standardize the management of municipal water and construction water under the Energy Management Policy
  • Continuously enhance water management to mitigate water stress and water risks
  • Implement water-saving initiatives by upgrading equipment and processes and reusing reclaimed water
  • Shorten turnaround time and streamline processes to reduce water consumption in single processes
  • Single-use bioreactors eliminate the need for cleaning and sterilization, which reduces water consumption by 70% compared to traditional stainless-steel systems

Our initiatives

  • Improve the environmental management system according to ISO 14001 standards, and increase the coverage of ISO 14001 certification to 31% of operational sites
  • Improve production management to reduce wastewater generation at source, and upgrade wastewater treatment facilities to reduce the concentration of pollutants discharged
  • Optimize processes, upgrade exhaust gas treatment facilities, and engage a qualified testing organization to conduct exhaust gas testing
  • Manage waste throughout the process from collection to storage, transfer and disposal, and promote waste reduction, recycling and detoxification
  • Replace plastics in shipping boxes with 100% recyclable materials, which reduces waste by 82%
  • Optimize processes to increase production efficiency to reduce material usage, which minimizes waste generation and energy consumption
