January 17, 2025
Recently, GenScript Biotech Corporation (HK.1548) announced the achievements of its "GenTeer (GenScript Volunteer) Program" for 2024, an innovative corporate social responsibility initiative. Launched in August of 2024, the program has quickly garnered enthusiastic participation from GenScript employees across more than a dozen countries, including the U.S., China, France, Spain, Japan, South Korea, India, Singapore, etc. Thanks to the collective efforts of its global workforce, the company successfully organized over 50 volunteer events, accumulating over 1,400 volunteer hours—well beyond the original target of 1,000 hours set when the program was launched.
Rooted in GenScript’s corporate culture and core values, GenTeer has created a global platform for employees to engage in charitable work. The Asia-Pacific volunteer team partnered with The Salvation Army to launch the "Building Bridges of Love, GenTeer in Action" donation initiative. In Seattle, volunteers worked with The Sophia Way, a nonprofit organization, to support its women’s shelter. Sho Fuji, a retired GenScript employee as of September of 2024, continues to volunteer as part of GenTeer, contributing 196 hours of service.
The GenTeer public welfare platform not only brings together the goodwill of individuals but also transforms it into a powerful force for social good. In 2024, the GenScript Nanjing University 100K Relay elevated its "Health Run" into a "Charity Run," using the momentum of running to amplify charitable efforts and raise awareness for "Butterfly Children"—patients suffering from the rare genetic skin disorder Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB). The charity run, along with registration fees and on-site sales, raised a total of 35,799 RMB, which was fully donated to Debra China to support the daily care of these patients, turning the spotlight on this rare condition through tangible actions. Additionally, GenScript made a 100,000 RMB donation to the Fujian Province Responsible Action Education Foundation, helping to advance the "Reading Together Initiative," which aims to promote educational equity and enhance children's reading experiences.
Through education support, community service, involvement in social welfare projects, charity sales, and donations, GenScript has evolved from organizing isolated charitable events into establishing a global volunteer service ecosystem.
Meanwhile, GenScript also encourages its global employees to use their personal influence to engage customers, partners, and even family and friends in volunteer activities, aiming to reach key influencers and extend acts of kindness to a wider community. In November of 2024, a severe storm hit Seattle, and GenTeer participated in community service work for the charity organization the Sophia Way, which is to support women experiencing homelessness on their journey from homelessness to safe and supportive living in the Seattle area. “I would love to express our extreme gratitude for everything that GenTeer is doing for us here at the donation center. We're so excited to have that support, and it just really means the world to us to ensure that the women that we serve are receiving the items that they need to feel supported and feel good and have a lot of dignity around their journey out of homelessness. So thank you so much. Let's go GenTeer.” Said by Megan Duncan, the Sophia Way Engagement Manager.
2024 marks the 20th anniversary of the ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) concept introduced by the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC). Incorporating ESG into a company’s development framework is seen as a "hard rule" that drives long-term, sustainable brand growth, while a company's volunteer services represent the "soft power" that humanizes its brand. Sherry Shao, rotating CEO of GenScript Group, commented, "Our company not only carries the responsibility of advancing technological progress, but also embraces the corporate mission—Make People and Nature Healthier Through Biotechnology. Turning our expertise into a force that eases the burdens of those in need and adds value to society is deeply ingrained in our corporate culture. GenTeer represents the shared identity of GenScript volunteers around the world, leading us to break boundaries, move forward together, and help and influence more people."
Public welfare is a fundamental part of a company's role as a responsible social citizen. It reflects the mutual commitment between a company’s growth and its social responsibility. Jesse Chen, Vice President of GenScript Group, emphasized, "Public welfare isn’t about creating a spectacle—it’s about genuinely helping those in real need. It’s not about a few people doing a lot, but about many people doing a little bit more."
