molecular resonance force microscopy (MRFM)

A technique similar to atomic force microscopy, which, in theory, can detect and MAP magnetic resonance in paramagnetic nuclei of macromolecules. The MRFM resonator probe, mounted on a flexible cantilever in proximity to a test molecule, detects resonance at a distance of up to 100 Å. The tip of the probe scans the molecule, which is anchored to a surface, and the magnetic field emanating from the tip evokes a resonance in the sample which is detected by a minute vibration of the cantilever.
